I think some real estate shows are great and can be very helpful to homeowners and homeshoppers alike.

However, I am not a big fan of these higher end shows which paint a very unrealistic picture of what buying a luxury home is like. I know the shows are fake, but I feel like many people don’t realize that and get false ideas of how real estate really works.

When a seller is thinking about selling their home, they ask a REALTOR® to come over and give a presentation. The REALTOR® goes through all their marketing expertise and how they are going to sell that owner’s home. They also go through market data to help come up with a value or listing price range. You rarely see that on these shows.

Another unrealistic idea for a show is when a REALTOR® shows a set of buyers three houses and they pick one. Anyone who has bought or sold a home, knows it takes way more than one afternoon and three properties to find the one you want.

I do handle higher end properties at times and have worked with some higher end clientele. Most of them do not want you discussing any of their transaction with anyone, let alone on a tv show. I watch in horror as the REALTORS® bad mouth and whine about their clients. That is NOT how REALTORS® should be portrayed.

I think these shows make the REALTORS® look terrible and show us in the wrong light. We are professionals that are supposed to be the “middleman” that helps facilitate a transaction. We assist buyers and sellers with a transaction. Everything else is fluff and unnecessary.

I hope these shows fade away sooner than later and they stick to the remodeling and design shows which give people a more creative and positive view on what they can do with real estate.
